Santa Monica Guide: Beach, Pier & California Lifestyle Essentials
Santa Monica is the idealised version of California coastal living — broad sandy beaches, a landmark pier with Pacific Ocean views, a walkable downtown, and a year-round outdoor café culture that seems immune to the weather anxieties of the rest of the planet. It's technically a separate city from Los Angeles proper, with its own government and distinct personality, but it functions as LA's most beloved beach destination and a benchmark for how the Southern California lifestyle is supposed to work.
The Santa Monica Pier is iconic precisely because it's both a tourist attraction and a genuine neighbourhood institution — the Ferris wheel at Pacific Park, the 1922 carousel, the aquarium underneath, and the trapeze school all coexist with the fishing pier where locals cast lines at dawn. The pier is the western terminus of Route 66, marked by a small sign at the end that draws pilgrims completing the legendary cross-country drive.
Beyond the pier, Santa Monica rewards pedestrian exploration. Montana Avenue's boutiques and brunch spots are where Brentwood professionals conduct their weekend rituals. Third Street Promenade connects to the excellent Farmers' Market at Arizona Avenue (Wednesdays and Saturdays) where LA chefs shop for heirloom produce. Bike the Strand all the way to Venice for the full coastal experience and people-watching.
