Los Angeles residents looking to keep fit on a budget have more free options than ever this July, with a surge of community fitness events popping up from Malibu to Echo Park. The city’s parks, beaches and public spaces are playing host to high-intensity intervals, Zumba blowouts and stretching sessions – and, crucially, none of them require breaking out a credit card.

The cost of studio classes and gym memberships in LA routinely tops $30 per session, putting a consistent fitness routine out of reach for many locals. In a summer on track for record temperatures — and with many Angelenos feeling the pinch from rising living costs — free outdoor workouts have become hot property. “We’ve seen our attendance nearly double since last July,” says a staffer from the nonprofit LA Moves, which organizes outdoor group classes along the Silver Lake Reservoir. Up to 120 people sweated through the last Saturday’s 9am Mobility & Core session, spilling across the path between West Silver Lake Drive and Van Pelt Place.

From the Pacific to the Park

This month’s calendar is packed. The Santa Monica Beach Fitness Meetup stages four free weekly bootcamps on the sand at 2600 Ocean Front Walk, drawing crowds at sunrise on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In Griffith Park, the nonprofit Friends of Griffith Park is back with its free “Summit Yoga” series every Saturday at 8am, held near the Charlie Turner Trailhead. “We asked for sign-ups to cap at 80, but more than 120 usually show up,” says an organizer. Elsewhere, Pershing Square’s Summer Sweat program returns to downtown, with no-cost dance cardio, boxing and Pilates offered every Wednesday evening – just bring a mat and water. Yoga Echo Park holds all-ages, all-levels classes by the lake every Sunday at 10am, steps from Glendale Boulevard.

The Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks has continued its push to make exercise more accessible. Across more than 20 city-run parks, Rec & Parks hosts free group walks, bootcamps and tai chi for all ages – check listings for Memorial Park (North Hollywood) and Baldwin Hills Recreation Center, both of which now require RSVP via laparks.org after several sessions drew 200-plus participants in June.

Demand Surges as Costs Climb

According to a 2025 UCLA Center for Health Policy Research survey, nearly 39% of LA County adults reported skipping exercise due to cost barriers or lack of local options. The rise of free, regular group events is changing that calculation. Organizers point to increased turnout as gyms hike monthly dues or drop their low-income sliding scales. Many fitness studios in West Hollywood and Venice now charge $38-$46 per class, up 12% from two years prior based on a check of posted rates last week. By contrast, events like Run With Us LA’s weekly 5K from Griffith Park’s Old Zoo parking lot at 7am each Sunday, or the Koreatown Wellness Circle’s Saturday morning community walks, cost nothing unless you decide to tip an instructor.

A bonus for participants: All these gatherings are outdoors, bringing people together even as heat advisories prompt health officials to encourage early-morning activity. “Neighborhood access is everything,” a Rec & Parks staffer said, noting a 21% increase in group fitness signups since March across the LA parks system’s free offerings.

How to Join In

Most of these events require only a quick RSVP or a sign-in waiver on arrival. Full schedules can be found on organization websites – laparks.org, santamonicafitnessmeetup.com, or searching “free LA fitness meetup” on Eventbrite. With LA’s street temperatures forecast near 90°F for several weekends, many groups are starting sessions by 8am or scheduling post-sunset activities. Pack water, sunscreen and a towel, and check individual event postings for gear requirements. For those with health concerns or new to vigorous exercise, it’s always wise to check with a local medical professional before joining group activities.

With more options than ever, getting fit as part of an energized community doesn’t have to cost a cent. Whether you’re a first-timer or a veteran of the circuit, this July’s local calendar makes it easy to move and connect with your neighbors – all without opening your wallet.
